A Creativity Manifesto

Part of the reason for launching my newsletter, Words on Wednesday, was to establish myself as a recognized professional/thought leader/authority in book coaching. In writing this newsletter each week, I’m actively working to find and define my voice, carefully choose the words I want to put forth in the world each week.

Another part of this effort was revamping my website, which I did in May 2023. I’m working with a business coach on developing a clear brand message and a website designer to put that message into the world.

In an earlier iteration of my business, I participated in a mastermind with Dan Blank (www.wegrowmedia.com), an insightful, human-centered marketing expert who specializes in working with authors. During one of the weeks of the 12-week session, Dan asked participants to write a creativity manifesto. This exercise guided me to think about my beliefs about creativity and how those beliefs shine through in my work as a book coach. I still stand by these beliefs, and there’s a certain reassurance in the constancy of them, that I took the time to write this with care, consideration, and intention that is lasting.

Have you ever written a manifesto—for creativity or another subject? If not, I encourage you to do so.

Creativity Manifesto

I believe

  • In the power of listening, to others and to yourself.

  • In the value of words.

  • In the potential of words and story to lead to connection,
    which leads to compassion,
which leads to inner and outer peace.

  • In the obligation to share my story and help others share theirs.

  • In nurturing creativity.

  • In seeing the craft behind all creative endeavors.

  • In excellence, not perfection.
